Fall for something, but not... / PHOTOGRAPHY SCAM

My entry today is just an alert for those who also received the following inquiry for photography services.
In 2010 I received the same request and created a fun little game out of it to see what a scam like this is all about and how to avoid them.

It seems legitimate and professional and to know that you are the "chosen photographer" feels awesome.

I replied to the request with a proposal
I was chosen to do the job and promised my fee
A couple emails later with a tiny bit of confusion with payment delivery (distraction) money orders arrived
A call to the issuing bank for the payment produced interesting results:

Note the handwritten amount on each money order - that is the original value
Each m/o had been cashed for a small amount and a larger amount was printed on them

The Instructions included told me to deposit them and return the excess amount paid

Doing this would place empty money orders in my account
Excess amounts sent back due to overpayment would be my loss
The SCAMMER receives my money in return for worthless money orders
My fee = $1030 and money orders total $2975 ...only $1945 difference (sarcasm)

Could you please answer these questions if you are interested in this offer

1)Are you able to provide this service on a date between April 20th and April 30th ? We are quite flexible. which exact date will be good so as to include this in our plan ?

2)What is your location in Mississippi so as to estimate how close you are ?

When all is said and done, I DID NOT fall for it the first time. I had a bit of detective fun in the process of seeing what this sort of thing is all about.

I recommend that photographers don't get overly excited about this sort of request, follow through professionally and realize things aren't always as they appear. If you are suspicious, don't waste your time, just don't reply.
Be wise and patient with the process of doing business in a consistently professional manner and you'll likely not get burned... I'm glad I didn't.

ENTER TWENTY12 • HAPPY NEW YEAR!

2011 was a fantastic year with many great new adventures and so many amazing blessings • • • God is so good to us!

Peggy Jo and I are traveling more with my commercial and stock photography and our Genesis Pure business. My commercial photography work is increasing - two of my most recent shoots include Norman Love Confections and Fannie May Chocolates (artisan, valentines & easter). We will be traveling to both coasts and places in-between this year and have plans to travel to Europe. Our new business is allowing Peggy Jo to make a shift from f/t Real Estate and allowing us to work side-by-side once again doing things we love to do.

Everett is living in Seattle and working with The C4 group as an Americorp VISTA. We are proud of him as he has applied himself to this new assignment and has grown tremendously. He will complete this assignment in August and we are eagerly looking forward to the exciting things he will do with his extensive skill-set and numerous talents (A dad's bias clearly ...but the truth none-the-less). His dedication to Christ and the blessed life he leads make us so proud of him. Everett continues to rock climb and compete as time allows and doesn't give up on trying to get me/us to take up his sport. Also, he is in a relationship that we are watching closely with great anticipation. He is the greatest son anyone could ever have - we are so blessed!

Erin has remained in Springfield and continues to work for a sign company. She is also amazingly talented and continues to work on creative ideas that are very impressive to say the least... cool knitting items and visual arts projects. She amazes us with her blessed life and passionate heart and dedication to Christ. Erin does her share of rock climbing and she's very good at it. She makes sure Peggy Jo and I have our quality time with her each week over coffee or lunch.... She is the greatest daughter anyone could ever have - we are so blessed!

We are so excited about the year ahead and how the journey will develop. We look forward to all the relationships we will begin and the growth of the quality relationships we have maintained over the years including those we have started over the past year. Our dreams and goals will lead us to places where we can help others and be effective in positively impacting the world around us.

We trust you will also let your dreams and the goals you set lead you to do greater things in 2012!

Winter slow-down... I don't think so.

Thanks for dropping in....

This year has been especially busy with travel and the additional business opportunity we took on. It's been busy, productive and enjoyable. Now we're headed into fall/winter and things are picking up - not slowing down. My inbox and voice mail box each contain communications that need to be replied to about upcoming photography work. I'll get to those once I finish this over-do update.

We have been traveling more this year than the previous. It really is fun to drive across country see and stay in different places. Colorado, Seattle (Peggy Jo and Everett), Florida, and a variety of shorter trips to KC and STL.

I have enjoyed time with my wife, Peggy Jo, so much in the past year as we have been on the road and working together on our business more and we are so proud of our adult twin children Everett and Erin... we're so blessed!

The travel resulted in the compilation of shots here containing candy shoots for Norman Love Confections and Fannie May Brands, and some food shots locally for City Mexican Cuisine as well as some modeling editorial work - I LOVE WHAT I DO.

I'll attempt to update this more often even as life gets busier into the holiday season.

Joplin

Peggy Jo and I had the privilege of helping Convoy of Hope following the devastation May 22 EF5 tornado in Joplin.

Our first opportunity to help was by providing photography support to Convoy of Hope in general and spending the day with Hal Donaldson the COH founder. The thing I kept hearing Hal repeat to those who faced loss through the storm was, "It's going to get better" - that one statement left an impact on my life.

We can all do something to help those who face loss and destruction and encounter such need.

Christmas update and 2010 recap...

Christmas day is winding down and It's time for an update.

We had a great Christmas Eve playing games and stayed up really late to open presents on Christmas morning.
Each of us woke up to fun things in our Christmas Stocking (even Ozzy our dog and Sassy our cat) and a pile of wrapping paper from our late night gift-giving.

Everett and Erin spent the night so we could have a complete celebration together and eat tons of great food (they now both live on their own in apartments with roommates). It is so much fun to spend time with our children and we are so proud of how they are maturing and facing life. We look forward to all of the exciting experiences they'll face in the future and all of the blessings they will encounter.

Peggy Jo has experienced another very productive year in real estate. I'm so proud of her as she works so hard to serve her clients making their buying/selling experiences enjoyable. She stays very busy and she does her job with excellence. She loves helping people find just the right home to buy or make a move at the right time. You can visit her website.

Our travel schedule this year was not as extensive as last year's was. We traveled to Washington (Seattle) and and to Colorado along with a few shorter trips. We have already made plans for some extended trips this year involving, Mexico, Colorado, California, Nevada, Utah to get things started – we'll add more as the year progresses. Considering we are headed toward our 25th anniversary next November we'll be planning a fun trip at the end of 2011 (It'll be a surprise).

Two of my largest commercial photography contracts involved the Echo smart pen by Livescribe and a new assortment of chocolates, confections and desserts for Norman Love Confections through his marketing firm, Priority Marketing. These shoots were done in addition to my ongoing effort to provide high-quality commercial photography through my primary stock portfolio managed by iStockphoto. Throw in the requested weddings and senior shoots, it's been a busy, productive and very rewarding year.

My photography studio will be moving back home as of the end of December. We have vacant rooms that work perfectly for the limited studio set-up I need. Also, my specialization in commercial stock photography allows me to utilize a greater portion of our home for shoots. This is an exciting opportunity to not only redirect income but to take on other photography challenges and broaden what my current portfolio offers.

We're really excited about the future as we watch our family mature, our business grow and other opportunities come our way. Most recently we started a new business in the health and wellness industry which is not only creating great benefits for our well-being but allowing us to impact the lives of others the same way. Peggy Jo and I have been watching and praying for something in addition to photography and real estate that would allow us to work together and we found it in Genesis PURE. We are striving for better health and we have aggressive financial goals so we're excited to have another vehicle that will help us reach them.

2011 is already looking promising and we are excited about the journey ahead.

Quick "in use" update

Here's an update of some pics and links to a conference that was held September 30-October 2, 2010, where my photos are in use...

This spring I did a series of photo shoots for James River Women's Designed For Life Conference "DARE TO DREAM" my company was listed in the attendance packet as James Pauls Photography

Many of the images from the shoot will be available for communications (when I get them uploaded) in my stock photography portfolio online at istock in upcoming weeks. Most will be in this girls & women lightbox or this one children-teens-young adults

The JRA Women team is fantastic to work with as well as all the models - the multi-day shoot was a blast!

HISTORY & UPDATE:
James Pauls founded eyecrave LLC in 1999, providing graphic design and stock photography services while living in Colorado Springs, Colorado. In 2002 he and his family moved to Springfield and for 6 years he worked at Assemblies of God National Headquarters overseeing design, marketing and resources as well as related staff for two departments during that time-span (2 years youth department and 4 years men's department).

After much consideration, James and his wife Peggy Jo (a Realtor - www.peggyjopauls.com) decided October 2008 was time to take the photography business to full-time status. James left his corporate position to put his effort into his photography passion and connect with the business community and the community in general.

James has developed an eye for a fresh take on photography in our digital era. The equipment investment has been an important factor for providing a competitive viable product. However, the intentional effort to educate himself with style, technical innovation and fear-less experimentation to uncover new ways of doing things, allows for a current approach to an age-old industry. His photography is utilized all over the world for communications, advertising, marketing and art.

wrapping up 2009 - studio open house 2010

As I begin, I want to wish you a Merry Christmas and the greatest New Year ever...

October was a busy month and ended with a trip to western Colorado.
That trip involved helping my mother get some things done around her house and securing an older mountain cabin to prevent break-ins.

Also, I enjoyed 3 days of photo shoots with friends involving creative and seasonal stock photography themes. I threw in a photo shoot for one of our nephews who is a senior this year.

November wasn't any less busy but it was just as much fun.
I spent much time guiding the design of my new studio and taking care of several commercial and corporate photo shoots.
We went to St Louis during Thanksgiving weekend as a family and had a great time together - going out to eat, running around downtown and part of a day at the city museum (a very cool place).

December 1 was my first day at the new eyecrave photography studio and over the past few weeks it has been coming together nicely. It is great to have an indoor option for photo shoots and a place where ideas can develop with precision in preparation for a shoot. It is a very simple and clean studio with a modern look.
Since my focus is stock photography it is designed to allow for shoots anywhere inside.

My portfolio will continue to be displayed online and through my photo books and materials.
It's December 20 - that means 2009 is soon to be a memory.
This has been an exciting year, starting out with a launch of my photography business full-time - it is exciting to watch it grow. Now, with the opportunity to grow even more with dedicated space I am excited for 2010 and what lies ahead.

My stock photography portfolio will take on more shape with added creativity and depth. My corporate and personal (family,wedding,senior...) will continue by request only. In addition to this I will be seeking out additional models (individuals and families) to assist me in developing concepts to add to my commercial stock portfolio . I'll be starting the New Year (01.01.10) with a wedding shoot - LOL.

Peggy Jo, my wife, has experienced a great year in Real Estate and I am excited to see how she does in the upcoming year.
She is very good at working with people, helping them find what they need and helping them sell what they have.

Our children, Everett and Erin are stepping out on their own and making us so proud with how they are facing independence and the life that lies ahead. I want to thank everyone who has contributed in so many way to help me and my family this year during the challenges of transition in business and life. God has blessed us with direction and provision and so many wonderful friends!

sweet shots and sweet opportunities

...about time for an update

I have been delayed in updating my blog this month because so much is happening as I work hard to stay ahead. I ended last month with a shoot in Fort Myers, Florida shooting candy for Norman Love Confections through a SW Florida marketing company, Priority Marketing. It was an intense time of work - enjoyable and productive.

December 1 (or a few days sooner) I will be moving into a new photo studio in Ozark, Missouri where we live. It took me quite awhile to consider the overhead of a building as "the cost of doing business" and take the leap. It will provide the space needed to expand my commercial photography options and substantially build my stock photography portfolio. I will be offering some specials, like free photo shoots to interested models and families and/or business shoots to add variety and expand my commercial stock photography selections at istockphoto.com/eyecrave. We will host an eyecrave photography "open house" sometime in December - watch for details mid to late November.

A trip to Colorado is in the works which includes some time with family, friends and a couple days shooting stock photos with several other photographers.

branding update and stock links

Things are remaining very busy with at least one "away" trip per month to a pretty cool location - it's part of the plan.
Last month we went to Seattle and spent time with our friends Monty and Renee, took engagement photos of their daughter Ashley and Craig and some spontaneous family pics including some of their first grandson and his parents. Seattle is an amazing place to visit - I love the pacific northwest.

I'm in the process of making revisions in my branding - logo changes, new business cards and some backgrounds for social networks. Next will be the website look and some content changes.

back home

Hi again... I/we got back home about a week ago from a great time out east and in Canada. We drove from Springfield, Missouri to Jeffersonville, Vermont to shoot a wedding. It was a beautiful wedding an tons of fun. During our trip we went trough 14 states and saw many things we never had like, Niagara Falls, Montreal (Canada), Vermont, Maine, Rhode Island, New Hampshire and all the places between. I photographed as many state capitols as possible and we covered almost 4000 miles in 7 days. The power steering went out on my Land Rover during our return trip and I slept for about 2 hours and that was the only time I didn't drive. It's great to be home and prepare for upcoming photo shoot and get images uploaded to my stock portfolio.

Facebook free photo use

I pulled the information below from a news feed. You'll find helpful details to assist with protecting the use of your photos on Facebook by modifying privacy settings. I have a vested interest as a photographer to make sure I monitor use and prevent as much unauthorized use as possible related to my photos. I want to protect my clients as much as possible while maintaining my intellectual property and creative rights.

Social networks are making this a challenge - our practices of digital copyrights (often lost upon lo-res conversion) and watermarks (see image above) can prevent some unwanted use while we continue to serve our customers with quality images and the ability to display them.

Facebook’s sponsors can use your pictures without paying you. You may remember the controversy surrounding the Facebook terms of services and their use of our pictures. There is a new use of pictures that has many scratching their heads. Sponsors can use your Facebook photos to advertise, making you a spokesperson for services and products. One woman says her husband logged on to Facebook to find her picture advertising a dating site as a “hot single.“ When I logged on to the site, I also found that my picture was used to promote a dating website. If you don’t opt out of social ads, Facebook can use your picture. The computer system collects information about you and when your friends log on they see you. If you become a fan of a product, your picture may show up in the ad for the product.

The good news, is that it’s an easy fix. All you need to do is change your settings.
Here are the simple steps:
* Go to the settings tab
* Then to the privacy section
* Look at the news feed and wall section
* Then go to Facebook ads option and appearance in Facebook ads
* Click “no one”

OUR WORLD - culture and ethnicity

Thank you for dropping in...
I am working on a very exciting project concerning our culture and the vast ethnic diversity we experience all around us - world-wide and specifically in the United States.

Over the next year it will develop to the point that it will become a piece of art to be released through exhibits and a pictorial publication. The first of many photo shoots took place February 7, 2009 at Big Momma's coffee and espresso bar in Springfield Missouri involving approximately 20 people. Additional shoots will be planned for Springfield and other United states locations in upcoming weeks/months. I will also add to this project trough images collected during my travels involving journalistic-style shots and portraits.

I am excited about how this photographic effort is bringing people together who may not otherwise have the opportunity to meet. Already, I feel honored to have met a number of people from various backgrounds. This project gives me much joy and opportunity for new, meaningful, relationships.

New Year • New Ideas

It's time for some new ideas.

I was in discussion last evening with someone about our economy and what we really don't much know about all that is happening around us - we just know there is much reaction and speculation.

Let me propose that we hold onto hope. We can't lose if we dare to have hope and share hope with those around us. It may be that your hope is grounded in your faith, possibly family and for some it is in wealth. Hope is most genuine when found in a source outside our control. Do you know where your hope comes from?

Here's a random thought... smile at someone today!

A new photography endeavor I am pursuing is a project on ethnic diversity called, "OUR WORLD: Culture and Ethnicity. There is an element of secrecy involved in that participants are required to complete a "non-disclosure" agreement concerning concept and content until the project is released early 2010 or slightly before. It is pretty exciting and I anticipate you may even want to buy the book resulting from this year-long effort.

We discuss diversity and we acknowledge it but do we really realize how vast it is and how it impacts culture... us?

I plan to live with sustained hope, smile often and discover more about people...all people.

Happy New Year!

I am excited for all that this new year will bring...

Over the past few weeks I have been developing photography concepts and exploring areas I may not have already touched on.

The opportunity to meet new people and travel is increasing and I am enthused about that... compassion, humanitarian, missions and even business, journalistic-style, shoots will enable me to help other tell their story.

My commercial stock sales are increasing and I'll be posting new concepts and ideas that should expand my audience and produce increased results.

anticipate growth

In a few days it will be almost a month since I've launched out on this journey of full-time photography.

It could be scary, but somehow faith makes me feel (or maybe know) everything will be just fine. I don't enjoy roller-coasters... however, I do enjoy risk... maybe you lose it all or maybe your expectations are exceeded beyond imagination in positive ways... I choose the latter as I anticipate growth, spiritually, personally, emotionally, relationally and through the overall experience of building a business through relationships, intense effort and quality.

Much has happened in this short period of time and I have been busy:
• a new president has been elected
• ...secured several businesses as clients
• ...made attempts to connect with humanitarian organizations (one shoot planned this spring!)
• ...shot some shoots to use for commercial stock photography
• ...many phone calls
• ...prepared marketing tools
• ...building relationships/friendships
• ...working hard
• ...striving toward excellence
• ...listening to wise people
• ...learning, quickly I hope
Planning:
• set 2009 goals
• shoot concepts
• secure a variety of models, style, age, ethnicity, gender
• connecting with businesses and compassion/humanitarian orgs. to tell their story.
• networking and making many more friends
• anticipating referrals

Today, my final day at The Assemblies of God headquarters after 6 years.
It has been a very positive experience I have enjoyed the people and the challenges.
Tom Greene, the department head for Men's Ministries (my boss) is an exceptional leader and friend. The entire staff is amazing. Erin, my assistant, always had a way of making things easy and the best they could be . . . always awesome.

I will miss the daily interaction, but look forward to contact with these great friends as often as possible. Side note: Always keep your bridges intact, you may want to use them.

Now I begin the next faze of the journey. It is exciting to think of how many people I will meet and the opportunities ahead. We plan to enjoy the ride and experience the adventure to the fullest extent.

Photography: Something to pursue with passion, excellence and enthusiasm in an effort to tell the story of individuals, organizations, ministries, business . . . all around the world.

Hi everyone.

There is something new that I am facing that has been the works for several weeks and I want to make you aware of current events in my life.

Starting Friday, October 24 I am slipping away from my "day job" to dedicate myself to photography full-time. It is a tremendous passion of mine and I love working with people through this creative avenue. Up to this point, it has consumed my free time and holidays and now it is my focus.

This is my initial blog on this site.

My name is James Pauls and I live with my Wife in Ozark, Missouri.
Our twin son and daughter graduated from Ozark HS last year so we see them from time-to-time as they experience the need to return home from their student activities or for their summer stay. We have a cairn terrier named Ozzy and a cat named Sassy.

We moved to the area about 5.5 years ago at the request of a locally-based national organization to oversee marketing and resources for one of their divisions. I have made one move within the org. to do the same for another area with expanded responsibilities.

I have maintained and have grown a graphic design/photography company for over 8 years which has morphed into primarily a stock/commercial photography company over the past couple years called eyecrave LLC, found at www.eyecrave.com and www.eyecravephotography.com and www.istockphoto.com/eyecrave.
